Compassion Led Me To Steal A Neglected Cat. Was It Right?

Compassion Led Me To Steal A Neglected Cat. Was It Right?

I live in one of those old, cramped apartment buildings where privacy is a myth and every whisper travels through the paper-thin walls. My neighbour, in the flat next to mine, was a man who truly shouldn't be allowed near anything alive. Forget a pet, even a potted plant would wilt under his care. He had this small, jet-black cat – a beautiful creature, really – but he’d leave it out on his tiny balcony for hours, rain or shine, heatwave or chilly night.

I’d lie awake, listening to the poor thing's desperate meows echoing through the thin concrete, especially when he was inside blasting music or shouting into his gaming headset. My heart would ache. One particularly brutal monsoon night, the rain was relentless, and the temperature had plummeted. I saw the cat, huddled, shivering, utterly soaked, its cries weaker than usual. Something inside me just snapped. I knew I couldn't just stand by and listen anymore.

In a moment of pure desperation, fuelled by what I truly believed was compassion, I found a way onto his balcony. It was risky, foolish even. But seeing that tiny, miserable creature, I felt a surge of protectiveness. I scooped him up, a silent, shivering bundle, and brought him into my own home. He was terrified, but once warmed and fed, he purred, a tiny engine of gratitude.

Six months have passed. He’s thriving, a playful, loving companion who brightens my lonely flat. But every morning, and often in the evenings, I see my old neighbour glance around, his eyes scanning the building, a flicker of bewildered loss on his face. He never really looked for the cat before, not properly. Now, he does. A part of me feels a profound guilt, a heavy weight for the deception. I stole someone’s pet. But then I look at this content, purring soul curled up beside me, and I wonder: was it stealing, or was it truly saving a life?
