My Desperate Lie on the Mumbai Local Saved Me from a Knife.

My Desperate Lie on the Mumbai Local Saved Me from a Knife.

You hear stories of 'wrong place, wrong time' in big cities, but you never truly believe it until it happens to you. Especially not on your routine morning commute. This morning, on the Mumbai local, my life hung by a thread, saved only by a desperate lie.

I was on my way to work, lost in my headphones, the usual symphony of the city and train noise a comforting backdrop. There weren't many people in the compartment, which was unusual for that time. Suddenly, a man a few seats away started yelling, his voice rising above the din. He was talking to no one in particular, his words slurred and angry. I tried to ignore him, thinking it was just another day in Mumbai, another distressed soul.

But then, he started walking towards me. My heart gave a little lurch. I pulled off my headphones, trying to look composed, but inside, a cold dread began to creep in. He stopped right in front of me, his eyes wild, and a glint of steel caught my eye. He held a knife. "Kya chahiye tujhe? Kaat doon kya tujhe?" (What do you want? Should I cut you?), he hissed, leaning close to my face. My blood ran cold, fear paralyzing me.

My mind raced, a thousand scenarios flashing before my eyes. But then, an unexpected calm descended. I looked him straight in the eye, my voice surprisingly steady, and said, "Bhaiyya, please… I tried to end my life last night. I'm just trying to get through the day." The words were a complete fabrication, born purely out of instinct and terror.

His expression, a moment ago contorted with rage, softened into confusion. He stared at me, then at the knife, then back at me, as if processing. He mumbled something under his breath, took a hesitant step back, and then another. He slowly walked away towards the other end of the compartment.

I didn't move until he got off at the next station. My entire body was trembling, my heart hammering against my ribs. I sat there, trying to breathe, the noise of the train suddenly deafeningly loud. I still can't believe it happened. A desperate lie, spoken in a moment of sheer terror, might have just saved my life. I'm still so shaken.
