Driven by Desperation: My Secret Weapon Against Sleep at the Wheel

Driven by Desperation: My Secret Weapon Against Sleep at the Wheel

Every weekday, my alarm screams long before the first hint of dawn graces the Mumbai skyline. I'm not a morning person, never have been, but the relentless demands of my job mean I'm behind the wheel by 6 AM, embarking on a 30-minute commute to the office. The previous night's late calls, family obligations, or simply the pressure of life invariably leave me sleep-deprived. That half-hour drive through half-empty streets is a constant, terrifying battle against heavy eyelids. I've felt the terrifying jolt of nearly drifting off, my car swerving slightly, my heart pounding in my chest. The fear of causing an accident, of becoming a statistic, is a visceral dread.

It was out of sheer desperation, I think, that this… method… surfaced. I can't pinpoint the exact moment I decided to try it, but the memory is hazy, fueled by panic and utter exhaustion. To combat the deadly pull of sleep, I started to edge. Yes, that's right. I use self-pleasure to keep my mind alert, my body awake. The shame that washes over me even as I type this is immense. I wrap a shawl over my lap – a pathetic attempt at discretion, as if anyone could see through my tinted windows in the pre-dawn darkness anyway. It feels incredibly depraved, yet it’s horrifyingly effective.

Recently, I even bought a small, discreet toy online. It makes the movements easier, less noticeable, and keeps my focus razor-sharp on the road, albeit for the most unsettling of reasons. I hate myself a little more each morning I resort to this. It's a secret that gnaws at me, a desperate measure to ensure I arrive at work safely, but at what moral cost? I just want to know if I’m alone in this twisted struggle, confessing my bizarre, shameful truth into this anonymous space.
